WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Pablo José Hernández, Resident Commissioner of Puerto Rico, defended FEMA funds for Puerto Rico in a House Homeland Security Committee markup. The Congressman spoke against the Trump Administration’s and Republican attempts to cut Department of Homeland Security grant funding, which are critical for Puerto Rico’s emergency response and preparedness.
“Our fear is not hypothetical. Our fear is real. If a hurricane hit tomorrow, would our emergency response systems be fully operational? If another earthquake shakes our island, will hospitals have the power to keep people alive? Right now, because of the administration’s reckless funding freeze, the answer is unclear. And that is unacceptable,” said Hernández.
The House Homeland Security Committee markup considered several bills, including a resolution from Ranking Member Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), which would require the DHS to provide Congress with necessary information on the consequences of halting DHS funds, including FEMA grant funds that are critical to Puerto Rico’s emergency response. Congressman Hernández supported and voted in favor of Ranking Member Thompson’s resolution. Unfortunately, Republicans did not adopt the resolution – choosing instead lack of oversight on the Trump Administration.
