Congressman Hernández’s appointment to these committees will uniquely position him to vote and strongly advocate for Puerto Rico’s interests, including natural disaster preparedness and response, combating drug smuggling, and enhancing public safety
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Pablo José Hernández, Resident Commissioner of Puerto Rico, was appointed to the powerful U.S. House Committee on Homeland Homeland Security and Committee on Natural Resources. These committee appointments will uniquely position the Resident Commissioner in ways to vote and strongly advocate for Puerto Rico’s interests in the areas of energy, natural disaster response and preparedness, drug smuggling, and public safety.
“I’m honored to join the powerful Homeland Security and Natural Resources Committees. I will work hard for the island’s energy grid’s reconstruction, disaster response and preparedness, and to combat drug smuggling in Puerto Rico. I look forward to working with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to deliver results for the island and the U.S.,” said Hernández.
“Rep. Pablo Hernández will be an outstanding member of the distinguished House Natural Resources and Homeland Security Committees in the 119th Congress, and his appointment to these prestigious committees is a true reflection of his exceptional talents and strong leadership in Puerto Rico and beyond. Over the course of the next two years, these committees will take up incredibly important work on behalf of the American people, and I look forward to seeing all Rep. Hernández accomplishes as we work together to seek common ground for the common good,” said Assistant Democratic Leader Joe Neguse.
The U.S. House Homeland Security Committee ensures the security of the United States and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Its mission is to safeguard the United States and Puerto Rico from threats and natural disasters, and oversee the effective functioning of the agencies such as FEMA and the U.S. Coast Guard and programs within its jurisdiction.
The U.S. House Natural Resources Committee oversees the management, conservation, and utilization of the United States’ natural resources. It focuses on policies that impact public lands, energy development, wildlife, water resources, and Indigenous affairs. The Committee, which has jurisdiction over Puerto Rico affairs, oversees public lands management, energy development, water resources, wildlife conservation, ocean policy, and mining and mineral resources.
As resident commissioner, Hernández has a right to vote in committees, and these assignments uniquely position him to advocate for Puerto Rico’s interests in Congress.
