Resident Commissioner Announces Over $4.3 Million in Federal Funds for Mitigation and Reconstruction Projects in Maricao and the Puerto Rico Department of Education

These allocations represent a critical investment to protect lives and property in future emergencies
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has announced a total of $4,390,189.17 in federal funding for mitigation projects and permanent work in the municipality of Maricao and the Puerto Rico Department of Education. These funds are part of the Public Assistance Program under Major Disaster Declaration FEMA-DR-4339-PR, following the devastation caused by Hurricane María.
“These allocations are part of Puerto Rico’s ongoing recovery process. As Resident Commissioner, I am committed to keeping the public informed of every step that strengthens our infrastructure,” said Resident Commissioner in Washington, Pablo José Hernández Rivera.
In Maricao, $2,892,518.29 were allocated to restore Camino Esmeraldo Justiniano, a key road in the Bucarabones sector. The project includes road reconstruction and protective measures such as green gabions, stormwater drainage, and repaving to prevent future erosion.
Additionally, the Puerto Rico Department of Education received $1,497,670.88 to implement improvements in school infrastructure, including permeable pavement, roofs with optimized drainage, and structural reinforcement to withstand high winds and flying debris during extreme weather events.
Both projects will be funded at 90% by federal funds under Sections 406 and 428 of the Stafford Act, reaffirming the commitment to a resilient and sustainable recovery.
This announcement is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Puerto Rico’s infrastructure and protect its communities.
