Resident Commissioner Announces Over $5.2 Million in Federal Grants for the Municipality of San Juan and the Medical Sciences Campus

The funding, awarded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, will support community health services and scientific research in Puerto Rico

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Resident Commissioner Pablo José Hernández announced today that over $5.2 million in federal funding has been awarded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to the Municipality of San Juan and the University of Puerto Rico – Medical Sciences Campus.

“I’m glad to announce these $5.2 million in federal funds to support public health services and scientific research in Puerto Rico,” said Hernández. “These funds will support a new research program at the University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus and strengthen health services with individuals living with HIV/AIDS.” said the Resident Commissioner

The Municipality of San Juan will receive $2,758,782 under the H89 - HIV Emergency Relief Project Grants program, which aims to strengthen health services for individuals living with HIV/AIDS. Meanwhile, the University of Puerto Rico. For its part, Medical Sciences Campus has been awarded $2,447,771 to establish the Puerto Rico Center for Microbiome Sciences, through the federal research program in Pharmacology, Physiology, and Biological Chemistry.

These grants reaffirm the capacity of Puerto Rican institutions to compete for and lead federally funded initiatives that advance innovation, health equity, and community well-being.
