WASHINGTON, D.C. – Resident Commissioner Pablo José Hernández announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has obligated over $6.9 million in federal funds to support permanent roadway repairs and hazard mitigation projects across Puerto Rico. These awards are part of continued federal efforts to recover from Hurricanes Maria and Fiona.
“These FEMA investments represent a commitment to rebuild not only what was lost, but to rebuild stronger,” said Hernández.
The grants include:
- $1.6 million to the Municipality of Orocovis to repair damaged culverts and embankments caused by Hurricane Maria, with green infrastructure mitigation features.
- $1.25 million to the Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTOP) for road repairs in Corozal due to Hurricane Fiona, including upgrades to stormwater systems.
- $4 million to DTOP for repairs to PR-555 in Coamo and PR-528 in Jayuya, integrating erosion control and slope stabilization measures.
All projects are funded under Section 406 of the Robert T. Stafford Act and include cost-effective hazard mitigation components. The Commonwealth is responsible for ensuring that sub-recipients receive these funds following FEMA guidelines.
