Puerto Rico Resident Commissioner Statement on President Trump’s Order Regarding Federal Funds
SAN JUAN, P.R. – Puerto Rico’s Resident Commissioner, Pablo José Hernández Rivera, issued the following statement in response to President Trump’s order to freeze federal funds, an action that will have a severe economic impact on Puerto Rico and the states:
“The president’s order, which halts the disbursement of federal funds for various initiatives, will have an immediate and negative impact on Puerto Rico and the states.
“However, for the peace of mind of the people of Puerto Rico, it does not appear to affect direct transfers or programs like Social Security and Medicare.
“We will keep the people informed and steadfast in our fight alongside Democratic leadership in Congress and across the states against measures of this nature.
“This administration will continue issuing orders, regulations, and laws that create anxiety, distress, and economic pain. These will be challenging years with significant hurdles here and in the states, but we will face them together and move forward.
“I am working with other members of Congress to defend the rights and allocated funds for all residents of Puerto Rico.”
