Resident Commissioner Announces Over $39 Million in Federal Funds for Construction Proyects in Mayagüez and San Germán
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Puerto Rico Resident Commissioner Pablo José Hernández Rivera announced today that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded over $39 million in federal funding to the municipalities of Mayagüez and San Germán. These grants, authorized under Section 406 of the Stafford Act, are part of FEMA’s Public Assistance Program to restore critical infrastructure damaged by Hurricanes Maria and Fiona, respectively.
Mayagüez – Roads and Bridges Repairs
Mayagüez will receive $2,531,480.02 in federal funds to restore five damaged segments of Camino El Dulcero and Camino Leclerc in the Río Cañas Abajo and El Quemado wards. The work includes removal and replacement of asphalt surfaces, concrete swales, curbs, guardrails, and embankment restoration. The project also includes hazard mitigation measures such as bioengineered gabion walls and drainage systems to prevent future erosion.
San Germán – Drainage Channel Repairs at Quebrada El Retiro
San Germán will receive $36,574,377.65 in federal funding to restore the Quebrada El Retiro flood control drainage channel, severely damaged by Hurricane Fiona. The project includes the replacement of over 1,300 feet of gabion walls on both sides of the channel, and the implementation of green infrastructure such as polymer-coated gabions lined with fiber blanket, deep-rooted vegetation, and integrated runoff control systems.
“This federal investment of more than $39 million is not just about repairing storm damage—it’s about building long-term resilience. I will keep fighting to ensure every community in Puerto Rico has the tools it needs to recover and grow stronger,” said the Resident Commissioner.
FEMA obligates the funding directly to the Government of Puerto Rico, which is responsible for reimbursing the municipalities upon completion of required administrative steps.
