Resident Commissioner Strengthens Municipal Alliances to Promote Local Development and Protect Federal Funds
These meetings are part of an ongoing effort to strengthen the relationship between municipalities and the federal government, ensuring resources and support to improve citizens’ quality of life
CAGUAS, P.R. – The Resident Commissioner of Puerto Rico, Pablo José Hernández, held a series of meetings with the mayors of Vega Alta, Mayagüez, Isabela, Guánica, Hormigueros, Aguada, and Yauco. During these meetings, discussions focused on priority projects such as the modernization of critical infrastructure, federal funding, and economic development.
“Every meeting we hold with our mayors reaffirms a fundamental truth: Puerto Rico’s development begins in the municipalities. What we’ve seen in Washington is not encouraging, but within the efforts we pursue under the Republican administration, our priority will be to address the needs of our municipalities. We are here to ensure—together with my district office—that no municipality walks alone in this effort,” said Hernández.
The meetings addressed topics such as flood mitigation, urban revitalization, support for innovative initiatives, and challenges related to federal funding, including key programs like Head Start and delays in FEMA-funded projects. The Resident Commissioner offered his assistance in facilitating contact with federal agencies, supporting grant applications, and promoting cooperative initiatives.
The Resident Commissioner also reiterated his commitment to defending essential programs such as Community Development Block Grants and vital services like Head Start, which are under threat from proposed federal budget cuts. These funds are essential for early childhood education, housing, and community services across the island.
